Granite Curling Club, Seattle, WA Wins "Lucky" Seventh Title

 

The standing room only crowd at the Chicago Curling Club, Northbrook, IL. was treated to amazing shot-making and a quick game on Saturday, March 27, 2010 by Brady Clark, Skip, and his team from the Granite Curling Club, Seattle, WA. Clark and wife Cristin Clark, Vice Skip, captured their seventh title, a record, while Lead Bev Walter won her sixth, and Philip Tilker, Second, won a second gold medal. Winning the Silver Medal was Al Gulseth, Skip, and his team of Michelle Wagner, Vice Skip, Mark Gulseth, Second, and Patty Olesen, Lead, from the Fargo – Moorhead Curling Club in North Dakota.

 

For the bronze medal, it was a game of one's. Wisconsin's Lori Karst as Skip, lead her team of David Carlson,Vice Skip, Angela Montgomery, Second and Dan Wiza, Lead, scoring one point in the first, second, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth end for a total of 6 points. Connecticut's team of Derek Surka, Skip, Charrissa Lin, Vice Skip, Sean Murray, Second, and Rachel Sethi, Lead, posted two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the seventh for 4 points. This set up an exciting 3-shot steal by Connecticut to win on the final shot...and the crowd went wild!

 

The Chicago Curling Club hosted this week-long event, inviting local curling enthusiasts and media to stop by and enjoy viewing championship level curling. In total, the Club hosted many club members, player families and 100's of newcomers to the sport. We want to extend a thank you to the Village of Northbrook, local vendors, and the Chicago media for supporting this event.

 

Congratulations to all the players! It was an exciting and successful USA Curling Mixed National Championship.

 

 

 

The Finals are set for Saturday at 1pm.

 

 

After watching many amazing shots this afternoon in the semi's, the finals for the Gold and Silver Medals are between North Dakota 1 (AI Gulseth, Michelle Wagner, Mark Gulseth, Patty Olesen) and Washington (Brady Clark, Cristin Clark, Philip Tilker, Bev Waller).

 

 

While Wisconsin (Lori Karst, David Carlson, Angela Montgomery, Dan Wiza) and Connecticut (Derek Surka, Charrissa Lin, Sean Murray, Rachel Sethi) will complete for the Bronze Medal.

 

The rocks will start flying at 1pm at the Chicago Curling Club. Admission will be $10. and everyone is welcome.

 

 

 

The Semi-Finals are set for Friday at 1pm.

 

 

After many great games this week, the Semi-Finals are set. Washington (Brady Clark, Cristin Clark, Philip Tilker, Bev Waller) will be playing Connecticut (Derek Surka, Charrissa Lin, Sean Murray, Rachel Sethi) while North Dakota 1 (AI Gulseth, Michelle Wagner, Mark Gulseth, Patty Olesen) will be taking on a very tough Wisconsin team of Lori Karst, David Carlson, Angela Montgomery, Dan Wiza. Admission will be $10. and everyone is welcome.

USA Mixed National Curling Championship Sweeps into Northbrook, IL March 20

If you are hooked on curling, and disappointed the Olympics are over...you are in luck. National Curling championships continue in Northbrook, IL after the Olympics have finished in Vancouver. Yes, the Chicago area is hosting the USA Mixed National Curling Championship, March 20 - 27 and it is open to curling enthusiasts to watch up close.

 

The playoffs will include 10 teams, 40 competitors in total - one regional mixed team from each curling region in the United States.

 

Curling has caught the eye of Americas during this Olympic season and we are hoping the interest continues. Curler's know this is a game of strategy and finesse. Many people want to compare it to shuffleboard, but it more closely resembles three sports," said Joni Cotten, Mount Prospect, IL., a member of the 2003 U.S. World Championship team and an alternate who competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. "It's like golf in that the greens and the ice have varying speeds, billiards because of the angles of round objects hitting round objects, and chess because you're always trying to position your stones to make your opponents shots more difficult and keep them from scoring". Looks of the game are deceiving. There is much skill and experience needed to be a winning team. That said, many people in the country enjoy this sport because it combines the engagement and exercise of a sport with a social element.

 

In the Chicago area curling started in the 1800s on Chicago's North shore when it was reported that a curling club was playing its games on outdoor ice in Chicago's Jackson Park. While it was suitable to curl outdoors in good weather and with good ice, it was not so desirable in subzero weather, especially with strong winds or falling snow, or even worse, warm weather.

 

The Chicago Curling Club was founded in 1948 in Northbrook,IL and the first Invitational Men's Bonspiel for 32 teams was held Feb. 3 - 5, 1950. A woman's curling organization was also established about the same time. The 1969 the current building was constructed, with a room for the American Curling History Museum. Today there are leagues for young and old, men, women, mixed teams, senior men, students from high schools and a recently organized wheelchair league. Curling is clearly a sport everyone can enjoy.

 

The USA National Mixed Curling Championship March 20 - 27, is open to the public and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this fine sport. Games will be played from March 20 to 26, and finals played on march 27, at 1:00 pm. Check the web site for daily game times. There will be a small admission fee.

Chicago Curling Club to Host the Mixed Nationals March 20-27, 2010

The Chicago Curling Club will continue to place curling in the media and on the national stage after the February Olympics are over -- hosting the USA Curling Mixed National Championships from March 20 - 27. This Championship is regional-based, aimed at determining the best men/women curling teams in the US.

 

Curling games will take place afternoon and evening from March 20 - 25. Finals will be on March 26 - 27.

 

This championship will bring over 40 competitors from across the country to compete in a play down process via the traditional states/regional championships. Each of ten regions is allotted one state team to participate in this National Mixed Curling Championship event.

 

The sport of curling has already caught the eye of the media, so we are expecting local viewers and sports enthusiasts to learn more first hand about our exciting sport. All games will be open to the public and a media blitz is planned. If your team is competing or you just love to watch great curling, consider joining us for the championship playoffs.

The Chicago Curling Club is hosting the USA Curling Mixed National Championship. There should be 10 teams, all of whom have won the right to represent their region in this National Championship. Regions include Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Washington, Alaska, Great Lakes Curling Association (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana), Grand National Curling Club (New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, North Carolina) and MOPAC (Idaho, Utah, California, Arizona, Oregon).

 

The Opening Ceremony will be Saturday, March 20, 2010 with the competitors being “piped on the ice.” The first games will start that night and continue until Friday when the semi-finals are scheduled. The Finals will take place on Saturday, March 27.
